What We’re Seeing in Commercial Vehicle Electronics Repair This Spring

After a very busy start to the year, we recently had our first slightly quieter week since January at Remanufactured Parts Ltd. It gave us a chance to step back and look at what may be coming next for the commercial vehicle repair sector.

With continued global uncertainty affecting parts availability, many operators are starting to consider what happens if supply pressures increase again. Over the past few years we’ve seen a noticeable shift where repair and remanufacturing is no longer treated as a last resort, but increasingly as part of a planned fleet maintenance strategy.

For many fleets, repairing key electronic components is becoming a practical way to reduce downtime, control costs and extend the life of existing vehicle systems.

ECU Repairs Continue Across Major Manufacturers

ECU repairs continue to form a large part of our workload, particularly across Mercedes, DAF, Scania and Volvo vehicles, although we continue to support many other manufacturers across truck, bus and specialist vehicles.

Many of the units we are now seeing are reaching the age where thermal cycling, vibration and environmental exposure begin to affect reliability. Common faults include communication errors, intermittent operation and complete non-response.

Component level repair remains a practical alternative to replacement, particularly where lead times or cost make sourcing new units difficult.

Spending Time With Fleet Operators

This month Jon Ellard visited the team at ODS Group, where Cliff Clements kindly introduced him to the workshop engineers. It was valuable to spend time discussing the technical challenges engineers are facing day to day and understanding the operational pressures within busy fleet workshops.

Jon returned with two transmission gear selectors now in for repair, and we hope this marks the start of a long-term working relationship where we can support ODS with electronic repairs that help keep vehicles available and reduce unnecessary parts replacement.

With ODS’s strong focus on environmental services and social value, there is also a clear alignment with our own focus on remanufacturing and extending the life of vehicle components rather than replacing them unnecessarily.

Strengthening Our ECU Engineering Capability

We have also recently welcomed Tom Perry as Senior ECU Engineer, strengthening our capability in complex diagnostics and advanced electronic repairs.

Tom is already supporting ongoing R&D work and helping develop our repair capability across ECU platforms. His experience with component level repairs and specialist processes such as BGA (ball grid array) rework supports our continued focus on repairing complex electronic assemblies rather than replacing them.

As anyone running a technical workshop knows, capability grows through people first.

Expanding Plant and Crane Electronics Repairs

Alongside our ongoing work with Atlas crane control modules, we have recently completed our tenth Scanreco industrial remote control repair.

These remote control systems are critical to crane operation and are often exposed to harsh site conditions including vibration, weather exposure and heavy usage. Faults can develop gradually through wear, moisture ingress or component fatigue.

Developing repair capability in this area allows us to further support the plant and lifting sector while expanding our specialist electronics offering.

You can learn more about our Scanreco remote repair service here.

Instrument Clusters and Wider Electronic Repairs

Alongside ECU work, we continue to support customers with repairs to instrument clusters, wiring looms and transmission electronics.

You can view our supported instrument cluster repairs here.

Looking at the vehicle electrical system as a whole often helps fleets identify faults earlier and avoid more costly failures later.

Battery Boost Packs – End of Winter Demand

One trend we have seen over winter has been an increase in enquiries for battery boost packs, which is not surprising given the strain colder weather places on vehicle starting systems.

We currently have one heavy duty Techno Boost TB1224HDD unit available and are offering free UK delivery.

With spring now arriving this may be the last new unit we stock for a while.

Spring is also a good time for workshops to check the condition of boost packs already in their garage or workshop. Units that have seen heavy winter use may benefit from inspection or repair to ensure they remain reliable when needed.

Looking Ahead

As we move into spring, we remain focused on supporting customers who value practical repair solutions, reliable turnaround times and a more sustainable approach to maintaining vehicle electronics.

If you have ECUs, instrument clusters, transmission electronics or specialist control units requiring repair, we are always happy to discuss whether remanufacturing may be a suitable option.
