Why Choose Reman Parts as Your ECU Remanufacturer?

Remanufacturing has always been an economically smart option for fleet managers facing faulty ECUs. Remanufactured ECUs deliver the same quality and assurance as new parts but at a fraction of the cost. Moreover, remanufactured electronic control units offer several advantages over new ones.

Before we get into those, let’s refresh on the basics.

WHAT IS AN ECU UNIT?

ECU stands for Electronic Control Unit (ECU). This is sometimes referred to as an ‘Engine Control Unit’ or Engine Management System. An ECU is essentially a computer with internal pre-programmed and programmable computer chips. It is used to operate the engine by using input sensors and output components to control all engine functions and is responsible for receiving all vital communication for everything from the transmission to the brakes. They come in all shapes, makes and sizes so don’t be fooled in thinking this is a small component. Hence, it comes in a few forms, namely:

  • Engine Control Units (ECU)
  • Transmission Control Units (TCU)
  • Body Control Units (BCU).

COMMON ECU FAULTS

The most common faults that we see within an ECU unit are liquid ingress, blown surge protectors, and broken connectors.

Liquid Ingress
Liquid ingress covers a multitude of substances including both oil and water. Water ingress can be caused due to the weather, where there may have been a severe downpour of rain, water will leak into the ECU through seals that may be broken or not fully sealed. If liquid ingress occurs it could leak through gaps as small as a micron which can be hard to detect and then causes the main components inside to oxidize.

This is where we would step in and replace all faulty components and ensure that the seals are correctly fitted ensuring the repair is complete.

Blown Surge Protectors
A blown surge protector is caused by reverse polarity, i.e crossed wires. This could be caused by human error when the ECU is fitted into the vehicle.

We would remove the surge protector by desoldering it and then replacing it with a brand new one by our specialist engineers who have many years of experience working with all kinds of ECU’s.

Broken Connectors
Broken connectors happen quite frequently as they are fragile components within the main body. They are prone to oxidization due to liquid ingress but can easily and quickly be replaced by our remanufacturing engineering team, in no time at all.

WHY REMANUFACTURED ECUs?

When an ECU unit experiences a fault, it usually necessitates a replacement as opposed to repair, but replacements come at a hefty price tag. Remanufacturing is a wiser option. Here are some reasons why:

Thoroughly tested and verified parts – All remanufactured ECUs come with a warranty, which ensures that the part works as expected after installation. Additionally, each unit is fully tested and verified against strict standards to ensure its functionality.

Cost savings – Remanufactured electronic control units cost significantly less than a brand new part, making them an economical option for fleet managers.

Environmentally friendly – Remanufacturing reconditions and upgrades used parts instead of creating new ones from scratch, reducing the number of resources required to produce a product.
